When someone in Stockholm searches for “plumber near me”, “hair salon Södermalm” or “accountant Stockholm”, Google shows a map with three businesses at the top, followed by regular results. Getting into those spots is what local SEO is about. The good news is that most of the work is free and well within reach for a small business.
This guide walks through the steps that make the biggest difference, in the order we recommend tackling them.
What is local SEO?
Local SEO is the work of making your business visible in searches with a local intent. Google decides which businesses to show based on three main factors:
- Relevance: how well your business matches what the person searched for.
- Distance: how close you are to the searcher or the area they mentioned.
- Prominence: how well known and trusted your business is, based on reviews, links, mentions and your website.
You cannot change where your customers are, but you can do a lot about relevance and prominence.
Step 1: Claim and complete your Google Business Profile
Your Google Business Profile is the listing that appears in Google Maps and the local map results. It is free, and it is the single most important part of local SEO.
- Choose the most accurate primary category, then add secondary categories that fit.
- Add your phone number, website, opening hours and the areas you serve.
- Write a clear description of what you offer, using the words your customers use.
- Upload real photos of your premises, team and work, and keep adding new ones.
- Use the posts feature to share news, offers and recent projects.
Step 2: Keep your name, address and phone number consistent
Google cross-checks your business details across the web. Your business name, address and phone number (often called NAP) should be written exactly the same way on your website, your Google profile and Swedish directories such as Hitta.se, Eniro and Allabolag. Small differences, like an old phone number on a directory, create doubt.
Step 3: Build a website that clearly says where you work
Your website is a major signal for local relevance. Make sure that:
- Your page titles and headings mention your main service and Stockholm where it reads naturally.
- Each main service has its own page with useful detail, not just a list of bullet points.
- Your contact details are visible on every page, usually in the footer.
- Your site includes local business structured data, which helps Google understand your name, location and opening hours.
- The site loads quickly and works well on phones, because most local searches happen on mobile.
If you serve several areas, such as Solna, Sundbyberg, Nacka or Täby, mention them where they are genuinely relevant. Avoid creating thin, copied pages for every suburb. Google sees through that.
Step 4: Get more reviews, and reply to them
Reviews influence both your ranking and whether people choose you. Ask happy customers for a review right after you have finished a job, and make it easy by sending a direct link. Reply to every review, positive or negative, in a calm and helpful tone. It shows future customers that you care.
Step 5: Earn local links and mentions
Links from other websites tell Google that your business is trusted. For a local business, good sources include:
- Local business associations and chambers of commerce.
- Suppliers, partners and clients who can list you on their websites.
- Local news sites, blogs and event pages.
- Sponsorships of local sports clubs or events.
Step 6: Publish helpful content
Articles that answer real questions from your customers attract visitors and show expertise. A dentist might write about what to do with a broken tooth on a weekend, a restaurant about its seasonal menu, and an IT company about setting up Microsoft 365 for a small office. Content like this also gives other sites a reason to link to you.
Step 7: Measure and improve
Use Google Search Console to see which searches bring visitors to your website, and the performance section of your Google Business Profile to see calls, direction requests and website clicks. Check every month, double down on what works and fix what does not.
How long does local SEO take?
Some changes, like completing your Google Business Profile, can have an effect within weeks. Building reviews, links and content is a longer process that usually shows clear results over three to six months. The businesses that win locally are rarely the ones with the biggest budgets. They are the ones that keep at it.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a physical address in Stockholm to rank locally?
You need a real address to verify a Google Business Profile, but service area businesses can hide their address and show the areas they serve instead.
Is local SEO different from regular SEO?
It builds on the same foundations, such as a fast website and good content, but adds local signals like your Google Business Profile, reviews and consistent business details.
Can I do local SEO myself?
Yes. Most of the steps in this guide are free and need time rather than technical skill. A developer can help with the website side, such as speed, structured data and service pages.
